Manual Handling:

More than twenty five percent of all injuries reported to the enforcing authorities, each year are associated with Manual Handling.

The majority of reported Manual Handling injuries result in over-three-day injuries, most commonly a sprain or strain, often of the back. While fatal injuries are rare, accidents resulting in a major injury, such as a broken arm, are much more common accounting for nearly ten percent of all reported injuries.

Considering the above, it makes good sense to take all reasonable steps to reduce the risk of Injury from Manual Handling, however an employer also has a legal requirement to do so.

The Employer Should:

  • AVOID the need for hazardous manual handling, so far as is reasonably practicable.
  • ASSESS the risk of injury from any manual handling that can’t be avoided.
  • REDUCE the risk of injury from hazardous manual handling, so far as is reasonably practicable.
